20 Years of Family Music-making

In 1987, Kenneth K. Guilmartin and his coauthor Lili M. Levinowitz, Ph.D., introduced the Music Together® program to the public—and today it is taught in over 1700 communities in the US, Canada, and 21 other countries.

This innovative program, with its emphasis on mixed-age classes and the active participation of parents and other caregivers, has been leading the field for twenty years. It has changed the lives of countless numbers of children, helping them to be confident, joyful music-makers. It has changed the lives of many adults, too—not just the grownups who attend class with their children, but also the teachers who work with the families, the center directors so deeply involved with their communities, and the entire Music Together LLC staff who are passionate about their work. [learn more]

Music Together Celebrates 20 Years
at the Annual Directors Weekend 2008!

On May 16, 17, and 18, 2008, Music Together center directors from around the world gathered in Princeton, New Jersey, for three days of workshops and music-making. Attendees at the tenth annual Music Together Directors Weekend learned skills to help them in their quest to enrich the musical lives of families in their communities. Directors also swapped inspirational stories with new—and old!—friends.

Directors even had the chance to share their own musical talents at Saturday night’s Cabaret.

On Sunday, Music Together presented Trenton Community Music School (TCMS) Community Outreach Director Ronnie Ragen with a Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize her years of service to the early childhood music community. Ms. Ragen helped begin TCMS’s Music for the Very Young program, which has brought Music Together Preschool classes to children attending public schools in Trenton, New Jersey for the past eight years.

In celebration of Music Together’s twentieth anniversary, Directors Weekend culminated with a rousing performance by the Music Together Band, which features the singers and instrumentalists from the nine song collection CDs. There wasn’t a dry eye in sight as “Grandma” Yvette Glover ended the event with a heartwarming rendition of “What a Wonderful World.” It was an enriching—and fun!—weekend for all!
