Classes > Princeton Lab School

Located in beautiful downtown Princeton, New Jersey, the Music Together Princeton Lab School, a licensed Music Together center, has played an important role in the history of Music Together®. The Lab School began in 1985 as the Center for Music and Young Children®, changing its name in 2009 to the Music Together Princeton Lab School, to better reflect its core purpose today: to promote the development of the Music Together curriculum.

Both Music Together and its Lab School are committed to helping families, caregivers, and early childhood professionals rediscover the pleasure and educational value of informal music experiences. Rather than emphasizing traditional music performances, the Music Together program encourages family participation in spontaneous musical activity occurring within the context of daily life. Music Together recognizes that all children are musical and that every child needs a stimulating, supportive music environment to achieve basic competence in the wonderful human capacity for music-making.

The Lab School pilots curriculum modifications, new programs, and research for Music Together LLC. It also serves as the public interface to the Greater Princeton Area for Music Together through class offerings, public speaking engagements, outreach programs, community service and sing-a-longs. Each semester, hundreds of area families register for and enjoy Music Together family classes; and the Lab School also administers preschool programs in several county locations, the largest of which is Music for the Very Young, sponsored by the Trenton Community Music School. That program, developed in partnership with the Princeton Lab School, now serves 750 students and 100 teachers in Trenton public schools and community preschools. In Princeton, the Lab School supports an outreach program at the Princeton Nursery School. Serving over 50 families, it is both an outreach program and a research site for the Lab School.

The staff, including Music Together founder/director, Ken Guilmartin and his coauthor, Dr. Lili Levinowitz, is committed to sharing the Joy of Family Music® and the educational philosophies behind it with the entire greater Princeton community.
