Classes > Lab School in Princeton

Founded in 1985, the Center for Music and Young Children developed Music Together and is committed to helping families, caregivers, and early childhood professionals rediscover the pleasure and educational value of informal musical experiences. Rather than emphasizing traditional music performances, CMYC encourages family participation in spontaneous musical activity occurring within the context of daily life. CMYC recognizes that all children are musical and that every child needs a stimulating, supportive music environment to achieve basic competence in the wonderful human capacity for music-making.

CMYC runs the Music Together laboratory school in Princeton, New Jersey, and serves families in the greater Princeton area. Each semester, more than 700 families register for and enjoy Music Together classes. The lab school also administers preschool programs in several county locations, the largest of which is Music for the Very Young, sponsored by the Trenton Community Music School. That program, developed in partnership with CMYC, now serves 750 students and 100 teachers in Trenton public schools and community preschools. In Princeton, CMYC supports an outreach program at the Princeton Nursery School. Serving over 50 families, it is both an outreach program and a research site for CMYC.
